ten wedding cakes

Only eight are shown in this lovely picture by my friend Kitty, while two remained in the kitchen. Here is the story of how we ended up with ten wedding cakes, if you are curious: My mom was making lemon pound cakes for our wedding. I thought we'd need maybe five of them. Then we decided, no, six. She made them the day before the wedding and on a whim made seven. Then the Epic Flood of June 2008 struck and my mom was stranded. They drove for hours, trying every direction, to get to our wedding. They were trapped, with the wedding cakes. Our wonderful friends, being the absolutely stellar people they are, went out to the nearest Krogers and got us three different wedding cakes and put beautiful flowers on top. Wow. And then at the very last moment, my mom and step dad found a highway that the state police had just opened, drove through some mud and water, took some back road called Coon Path Rd, and after five hours of driving (it's a 40 minute trip from her house to mine), she arrived at the wedding party. With the seven cakes. Everyone gave them a round of applause (the parents, not the cakes, although the cakes were fabulous). And that, my friends, is just one of the many exciting stories surrounding this wedding. Stay tuned, more to come. It was some kind of weekend!
