chicken of the sea

The island of Kauai is covered with chickens. Chickens everywhere. I had read in one travel guide that the chickens were blown out of their pens in hurricanes and then became wild all over the island. I found one website that claims that they are not chickens, per se, but are wild birds called "Red Junglefowl". I say if it walks like a chicken and squawks like a chicken...for all intents and purposes you could call it a chicken. At 4 am each morning, we could hear roosters going off, either nearby or in the distance somewhere. They ran in packs of roosters, hens, babies, and teenaged chickens. They were a mixture of reds, browns, blacks, tans, whites, speckled, fan-tailed, long-tailed, you name it. Having raised a tiny flock of chickens, which is now down to our one precious pet Penny, we loved having chickens all around everywhere we went. It struck my funny bone to see chickens kicking back on the beach.

Penny lived in the garage all winter, cuddled in next the waterheater. She made a mess every single day, and yet we let her live in there. We tried to move her to a cozy spot back in the chicken coop, but she would have none of that. It was too far from the house and too far from her people, apparently. She clearly expressed her displeasure. She's still sleeping in the garage, but has decided to roost on the luggage rack on top of my jeep. This is not good because I have to scrape chicken poop off the jeep each morning. She is supposed to be sleeping outside in the pine tree now, but the bf worried himself sick about her during the storms.
