every last thing was blooming

The trees were in bloom. The weeds along the roadside were in bloom. Every last plant on the island seemed to be abloom in subtle or eye-shattering color. I'm a vegetable and herb gardener, so plants that produce food always amaze me. A tree full of apples is wonderful. A tree full of avocados, which are $1.89 each in the grocery stores around here, nearly sends me into apoplexy. We went to the local farmer's market one day and bought bags full of ripe bananas, avocados, oranges, papaya, tomatoes, and star fruit. We bought chilled coconuts with straws. In place of the usual Indiana bouquets of zinnias and sunflowers were brilliant bouquets of bird of paradise, Heliconia, ginger, and hybiscus. We also visited a coffee plantation, a guava plantation, and a horticulture park. I just love to see things growing. When we returned home, I had forsythia, crocus, and daffodils blooming, and hyacynths and daylillies coming up...all under six inches of snow!
