Partner and I went out on a sunset cruise on a paddle boat on the Ohio River last weekend, a very impromptu but good decision. We went upriver from Louisville, and then back down river in the sunset, Louisville all lit up in front of us. It was lovely out and quite romantic. At many places along the river there were homes (some really fantastic ones, some small ones) with small docks and boats tied up. In some of the backyards, people were building fires and hanging out. What a great way to spend a summer evening, we thought--sitting by a fire, in the sunset, watching boats go down the river. Something about the gentle flow that is very calming to me. We talked about getting a boat someday, and taking it up the river from Louisville, all the way to Pittsburgh where the Ohio starts and joins up with the Monongahela and the Allegheny. The partner hails from Pittsburgh and talks about how these rivers, when he was a kid, were orange from the excrement from the steel mills and the air was very polluted, too. No more steel mills, no more good jobs, and that area was somewhat depressed for decades (seems to be coming back some now). But the rivers are cleaner. We talked about a lot of things while enjoying the breeze and the water and the sunset. It was a nice night.
